Tourism Afterworlds: Development and Deterioration in Asia-Pacific
The 4th ATLAS Critical Tourism Studies Conference will be hosted by HNU-ASU Joint International Tourism College, Hainan University from 13th to 15th January 2025 at Haikou, China.
We invite papers for the 2025 conference that navigate the problems, tensions, and opportunities arising from Tourism Afterworlds. Tourism Afterworlds signals how consequential the current moment is for critical tourism studies but questions how it should be characterized, understood, and progressed.
The Asia-Pacific Critical Tourism Studies Conference has successfully held three sessions in Yogyakarta, Indonesia (2018), Wakayama, Japan (2020), and Hanoi, Vietnam (2023).
In the wake of three previous successful conferences, ATLAS Critical Tourism Studies – Asia Pacific ventures to the People’s Republic of China for the first time. Hosting at Hainan, an island central to China’s collective domestic tourism consciousness and now open to much of the world through visa-free channels, is a means to bring the realities of tourism and development in Asia-Pacific to the fore.
Topics for organized sessions and panels are open. Some potential themes include:

ABOUT ATLAS-CTS-AP
An autonomous entity within the ATLAS network, Atlas Critical Tourism Studies-Asia Pacific (CTS-AP) is an international, interdisciplinary consortium for scholars, tourism practitioners and professionals, community members, travelers and travel writers. The group started in 2018 as simply ‘CTS-AP’ and joined the ATLAS network in 2023.

Culture and Heritage as catalysts for the Transformation of Tourism Development
The inherent dissonance of heritage leads to tensions among various stakeholders due to differing understandings and utilization of its values. Traditional tourism research interprets this conflict as a binary opposition, resulting in an irreconcilable contradiction between tourism development and heritage conservation. This study adopts a critical heritage perspective, conceptualizing heritage as a process. It explains how the innovation of pioneers and the spatial spillover of their tacit knowledge in the process of uncovering, recognizing, and utilizing the diverse values of heritage lead to the clustering of heritage-friendly tourism products. This, in turn, facilitates the transformation and upgrading of tourism destinations. The study emphasizes a critical reunderstanding of the positive relationship between heritage and tourism.

The Role of IPCC & Impact of Climate Change on Tourism on Coastal Cities
In this keynote address, Professor Winston Chow will draw on his years of wisdom as a climate scientist and his current role as Co-Chair of IPCC to identify not just the challenges of climate change to coastal tourism but also what we can do. In particular, he would outline the ways in which coastal tourism research can be aligned with climate advocacy, how the tourism industry can be more responsible and effective in its engagement with climate issues and how most of us, as consumers and tourists, can help mitigate tourism’s impact on our planetary environments and mitigate climate change impacts.

Community-based Tourism and Sustainable Development Goals in Korea
Drawing on her research in South Korea, Associate Professor Suh Hee Choi will speak about the relationship between sustainable development goals and community-based tourism. In particular, she will carefully examine the intricate links between the principles and values of sustainable development goals and that of community-based tourism and how community-based tourism can be a strategic tool for achieving sustainable development goals.

Tourist Experiences: Insights from Psychology
This keynote explores the application of psychological theories to tourist behaviour and experiences. It traces the evolution of those theories and how they have changed in response to broader social and economic changes. Among those changes have been the development of tourism, which reflects those social changes and contributes to them. In doing so, tourism theories also contribute to and gain insights from emergent psychological theories including those derived from the neurosciences. The keynote will provides an understanding of core psychological perspectives derived from both humanistic and empirical psychology and their application to tourist behaviours and experiences.

From Quantitative Growth to Creative Destruction: Schumpeter, Climate Change and Global Tourism 2.0
Our tourism worlds are changing tremendously. Even the Hajj, one of the biggest tourism events in the world, is affected by the heatwaves: More than 500 pilgrims died from heatstrokes in the last few days despite efforts by the organisers to provide cool water sprays and millions of bottled water. In this lecture, Prof Arlt will examine the changing parameters and conditions in our tourism environments and chart our new pathways, something he calls ‘Global Tourism 2.0’.

Rethinking academic impact: Shaping theory and research from Asia-Pacific
This keynote posits important questions we need to ask ourselves as academics - what is impact? By critically considering the ways in which our (institutional and personal) definitions of impact shape our research focuses and methodologies, use and engagement with theoretical frameworks, and educational practices and policies, we explore its broader implications for global academia. At the same time, it is necessary to emphasize this alongside the diverse sociocultural and geopolitical contexts of academia and academic institutions in the Asia-Pacific region. Rethinking academic impact is hence a first step towards inspiring a more inclusive and contextually relevant understanding of academic work, ultimately enriching theory and practice within and beyond the Asia-Pacific.
